Gregg County covers about 274 square miles in northeastern Texas, hemmed in by Upshur County to the north, Rusk to the south, Smith to the west and Harrison to the east. Its center sits near 32°30' north and 94°50' west. Longview, the county seat and largest city, is roughly 130 miles east of Dallas and 65 miles west of Shreveport, Louisiana, with Interstate 20 running east and west through the middle of it.

Why the whole region shares the same foundation problem
The Piney Woods stretch across northeast Texas from roughly Texarkana down toward the Gulf, and it exists because of rainfall — moist air off the Gulf of Mexico delivers 35 to 50 inches a year across the region. Longview lands at the high end of that range, near 50 inches, distributed through every month with a clear spring peak.
Underneath that rainfall, the general soil map for Gregg and Upshur counties shows the same handful of units repeating: Bowie-Cuthbert-Kirvin uplands, Lilbert and Darco sands, Kullit-Sacul, and Mantachie-Iuka and Urbo along the bottomlands. Sand on top, firm clay below, wet clay in the creek bottoms. Whether the house is in Hallsville or Big Sandy, that is the profile the slab is bearing on.
The one variable that changes meaningfully town to town is topography. Where a lot has slope — and much of this county rolls — the builder cut and filled, and the fill side is where foundations move first.
